Concussions pose a significant threat and challenge for Collegiate Recreation and Varsity programs.

For Collegiate Recreation, the absence of an Athletic Trainer (AT), especially for Sport Clubs, means that many concussions go undetected and even worse, participants often remain in the game after sustaining a concussion – risking a second and sometimes fatal concussion.

For Varsity Athletics, a key issue is that despite the presence of an AT, athletes don’t want to leave the field of play (tough it out!) – and coaches don’t want to lose a player. And both don’t fully understand the seriousness of concussions.

What to do?
For Collegiate Recreation, the reality is that hiring an AT won’t solve the problem by itself – there are just too many participants involved.

For Varsity Athletics, athletes need to accept that taking themselves out of the game is not a sign of weakness.

So realistically, the best approach is to do the following:

Collegiate Recreation

  • Increase concussion awareness for everyone (e.g. participants, staff).
  • Provide additional training in concussion recognition and response – for key people (e.g. Sport Clubs coaches & safety officers; Intramural referees; full-time Recreation staff).
  • Note – subscription is unlimited use for 12 months:  i.e. no limit on number of people who can watch the videos, access the written materials!

Varsity Athletics

  • Increase concussion awareness (varsity athletes, coaches, staff).
  • Focus on removing stigma around athletes getting their ‘bell wrung’.
  • Train everyone on their responsibility to the team through recognizing and acting on a suspected concussion.

Concussions Training Package

University of Saskatchewan

The ‘Concussions Training Package’ developed by SportRisk has been a great online training tool for our recreation participants and staff!

The material presented in the animated videos is easy to follow and highly engaging. Administration of the training package is easy – it’s all done online.

One of the great features for us is the ‘tracking tool’ which records to a spreadsheet each participant’s completion of the training, which in our fast paced environment is key.  This training package has been a great addition to our staff orientation. We also appreciate institutional support and endorsement of the training package through Risk Manager Merv Dahl!

Risk management in Campus Recreation is a major priority for many administrators due to the wide variety of recreational activities we now offer. The training of staff and the development of risk management policies surrounding concussions is currently at the forefront. SportRisk has been a provider of many helpful tools for recreation professionals, and the recent release of the concussion training package has become a new tool in that toolbox!.  It is easy to implement, applicable to different recreation programs, provides a tracking option to automatically monitor successful completion of the training, and provides the confidence in knowing my staff are well
